PODTEX_ the story of a pod, from capsule to creation

“Rethinking thinking – how can we ‘think’ differently” is the theme I have chosen. I believe it is essential for modern society to revaluate the way we think, plan and act in consuming the worlds resources, from the packaging associated with drinking coffee and energy required to create fashion. The chic, sustainable textile label Podtex was inspired by a recent trip to India. The resourceful nature of the people living in the backwaters of Kerala impressed me immensely, particularly how they through necessity and ingenuity use what is available locally to sustain their community, without having a detrimental impact on their environment. One such material the coconut fibre, is used to produce a strong rope known as coir, which is then used to manufacture souvenirs and paddle-powered houseboats. I have appropriated this concept by up-cycling every component of used Nespresso coffee pods into tactile textile artworks in a myriad ways.
